Smoke Chamber Repair

The smoke chamber is the transition just above the firebox that funnels smoke into the flue. Rough or damaged, it hurts draft and can collect creosote.

Inspecting the smoke chamber above a firebox

Above the damper, the smoke chamber is the sloped transition that channels smoke from the wide firebox up into the narrower flue. In many older masonry chimneys it was left rough, with exposed corbelled brick and gaps, which disrupts draft and gives creosote extra surface to cling to. Parging smooths and seals this area with a refractory material, improving draft and reducing buildup. This is masonry-system work; we only recommend it where it's genuinely relevant to your chimney after inspection.

What homeowners notice

  • An inspection noted a rough or damaged smoke chamber
  • Draft problems traced to the transition above the firebox
  • Gaps or open mortar joints in the smoke chamber area
  • Heavy creosote collecting in the smoke chamber

How we diagnose it

  • We inspect the smoke chamber's surface and joints
  • We check whether roughness or gaps are affecting draft or collecting buildup
  • We confirm it's a masonry system where parging applies
  • We look at the damper and flue above as part of the picture

Your options — and their limits

Parging

Applying a refractory material to smooth and seal the smoke chamber, improving draft and reducing creosote-holding surface.

Repair joints and gaps

Addressing open joints or damage in the smoke chamber where present.

What affects the price

We don't post flat prices, because an honest number depends on what we actually find. These are the factors that move it:

  • Condition and size of the smoke chamber
  • Access above the firebox and damper
  • Extent of parging or joint repair needed

When to stop using the system and get it evaluated

  • Gaps in the smoke chamber could let heat or smoke reach surrounding masonry — have it evaluated before continued use

How to prepare for the visit

  • Have any inspection notes referencing the smoke chamber ready
  • Let the system cool before the visit

Questions homeowners ask

What does parging actually do?

It smooths and seals the rough, stepped brick of the smoke chamber. That improves how smoke draws up into the flue and leaves fewer ledges for creosote to collect on.

Does every fireplace need this?

No. It's specific to masonry systems where the smoke chamber is rough or damaged. We only recommend it after an inspection shows it's relevant to yours.
